More than 2,700 residents of Imogbara, Odo-Ijesha and Iperindo benefited from free healthcare during the fourth Annual Community Medical Outreach by Segilola Resources Operating Limited, an exploration and gold mining company.

A statement from the firm on Thursday stated that the two-day outreach, held on August 7 and 8, 2026, provided medical consultations, laboratory investigations, specialist care and health education to residents of the mining company’s host communities.

The programme also marked the expansion of SegunCare, SROL’s long-term treatment and support programme for residents living with non-communicable chronic diseases, to include more comprehensive mental health support.

During the outreach, residents received 2,762 medical consultations with qualified doctors, while 81 were scheduled for general and specialist surgical procedures. The programme also recorded 1,860 laboratory investigations and 563 eye examinations.

Twenty-one residents were scheduled for eye surgeries, while 174 free prescription reading glasses were distributed. Residents were also screened for hypertension, diabetes, HIV, Hepatitis B and C, tuberculosis and other health conditions.

Seven chronic mental health issues were identified, with mental health rehabilitation and counselling provided. Another 50 residents were enrolled in SegunCare for continued management of chronic illnesses.

Building on the launch of SegunCare in 2025, SROL said the expanded programme would provide counselling for patients dealing with the emotional effects of long-term diagnoses, rehabilitation support for residents affected by substance use, grassroots education on chronic diseases and patient support groups to address social isolation.

Since its introduction last year, SegunCare has provided monthly medication, routine monitoring and long-term disease management for approximately 279 residents living with chronic illnesses. The additional 50 beneficiaries enrolled during the latest outreach will continue to receive care beyond the annual programme.

Speaking on the initiative, the Medical Services Manager at SROL, Dr Princewill Osuchukwu, said, “Our vision has always been to ensure that quality healthcare is not limited by location or affordability. While the annual outreach provides immediate access to essential medical services, we recognise that lasting health outcomes require sustained care.

“Through SegunCare, we continue to support residents living with chronic illnesses long after the outreach has ended, and this year, by integrating more mental health support, we are taking another important step towards delivering more holistic healthcare for our communities.”

One of the beneficiaries of SegunCare, Adeshina Sherifat, who has received treatment through the programme since enrolling last year, described it as life-changing.

She said, “Before SegunCare, buying my medication every month was very difficult because I couldn’t always afford it. Today, I receive my medication regularly, my health is monitored, and I feel much stronger. Knowing that the support continues even after the outreach has given me confidence and peace of mind.”

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Iperindo Community Development Agreement Committee, Soji Gbege, said, “For many families in our communities, quality healthcare remains expensive and sometimes out of reach.

“What has mattered most to us is not just what SROL provides during the outreach, but how consistently they have shown up for our communities year after year. That consistency is what has built trust between SROL and the people here, and it is what gives residents confidence that this support is not a one-time gesture.”

Since its inception, SROL’s Annual Community Medical Outreach has reached over 13,000 residents.
